Specialisation: Breaking free from AE

Thanks Freddie

For specialisation this trimester I initially wanted to continue with creating 2D rigs in After Effects but instead much more advanced. However, I've come to realise that the kinds of rigs I want to make will in fact be much easier to do in the software Toon Boom Harmony. Learning Toon Boom I believe will be a great asset to have in my knowledge bank as it is a pretty industry standard software with shows like: We Bare Bears, Spongebob Squarepants, Adventure Time, Futurama, JoJo's Bizzare Adventure, Tangled Before Ever After and Teen Titans being produced with it. I'd also like to use this as an opportunity to practice rigging for a cutscene I am to complete in my CIU212 project which I had initially planned to do in After Effects.

The only holdback in using Toon Boom for me is accessibility as it is still a rather pricey program on top of my other program subscriptions to use even with a student discount. This being the case I will be coming into uni more frequently to use the computers.

My work and my goal:

Most of my 2D rigging thus far has been facial and simple body rigs in After Effects (below), and I'd like to start expanding into more complex body shapes as to utilise my study from last trimester of anatomy. I'm confident in my ability to create an appealing character for this project (below are some examples), I'm just currently lacking the knowledge to create the rigs I want to create.

Above is an example of the kind of rigging I'd like to achieve.

My main goal of this specialisation is to have a fully functional and easy to animate full body 2D rig of a semi-realistic/ detailed bipedal character in Toon Boom. Moreover I would like to have the pipeline down pat so I can use this pipeline for CIU.

"Disconcerted Dan": A small short with a turning body and chair rigs and rigged office blinds.

"Blackwater Village": A short teaser completed for the World Builder's project with minimal animation and simple rigging on the fish and hero character.

My first facial rig in After Effects, an original character named Pickles.

Original Character: Ashe Fera, one of my very first characters designed when I was roughly 12. Her look has been redesigned over and over through the years as I've grown up.

Original Character: Akna, designed for Blackwater Village

Original Character: Teakka, designed for Fundamentals of Drawing in trimester 1

How am I achieving this?

Research and practice. That is the road to getting to where I want to be. I'll be starting off by watching tutorials, and attempting to follow along and possibly using some pre-made art. I've found series of tutorials, by Whimmery also known as Rhea Santos, that I have started to watch so I can get started with rigging (part 1 below).

After watching/following along with this series it will primarily be a matter of practicing. I will also be looking at the following tutorials, (one in particular I'm very interested in is the last one about 360 degree 2D rigs) :
